There are many occasions in which a house cries for a
comprehensive reform, but sometimes for lack of budget or energy you have to
content yourself with a quick facelift to update it. The good news is that
there are many options to give a totally new look to the property, with a
controlled investment and reforms that can often be carried out by oneself.
Indecortrends has consulted Pili Molina, designer at
Masfotogenica Interiorismo; Rosa Bramona, interior designer; and Demetrio
Muñoz, director of Soils and Walls, how to get our home to make a radical
change with little effort and money:
1. Painting: allied for walls and ceilings
When we face the rapid remodeling of a home, the condition
of the walls and ceilings is decisive, especially for its important visual
weight in the whole. Let's see options:
Change the white to gray and add moldings. "Just by
changing the white relief by a shade of gray, you will give a topical
note," says interior designer Rosa
Bramona, who proposes to go a step further and give an original finish to the
walls, how? "Place moldings - today's are light, flexible and easy to
place. Paint them in the same color as the walls or in a lighter or darker
shade of the same range, to bring dynamism to the room and / or delimit areas,
"he explains.
Make use of wallpaper, blackboard and mirrors. Pili Molina
is a designer in Masfotogenica
Interiorismo. For her, "the use of wallpaper, slate paint or a succession
of mirrors, simply leaning against the wall", are proposals to be taken
into account.
Give prominence to the roofs of the house. Pili Molina also
suggests looking up and paying attention to the ceilings, to paint them in a
differentiated color, "and give a point of novelty to an
environment". In addition, as the expert Rosa Bramona explains, "in
the case of very high ceilings, typical of old floors, painting them in a dark
color will make the dimensions of the rooms balanced".
2. Smooth the walls and hide the gotelé
"As an alternative to - expensive and annoying -
smoothing of walls, choose vinyl coatings, specially designed for placement on
all types of surfaces," reveals Demetrio Muñoz, director of the Madrid
company Suelos y Paredes : "The
irregularities of the wall without the need to treat them, even if you had to
make chasms, to embed cabling or pipes, "he says.
3. Change the floor without debris and with affordable materials
Choose floating floors, installation ' click'. They are very
practical: they can be placed practically on any support, and without the help
of a professional. Pili Molina proposes impressive finishes, "like burned
wood, capable of transforming a space in a radical way and giving a current
aesthetic".
The vinyl pavements. Increasingly popular, they allow to
solve the problem of old or damaged floors, in a fast, dry, "and with
incredible aspects", recognizes Demetrio.
Ceramic floor, with dry installation tiles. This option can not only be assembled and
dismantled to be reused in another space -very useful, if it is a rental
apartment- but also, as Rosa Bramona explains, "offers the added advantage
of being able to pass and hide installations by its interior".
Place carpets for cold or imperfect floors. There are of all styles, sizes and materials,
so it is very easy to integrate them: they multiply the warmth, improve the aesthetics
of the house and disguise defects. "There are proposals for synthetic
fibers that, apart from being cut to size, are practical as well as decorative
- they can be scrubbed", suggests the expert from Masfotogenica
Interiorismo.
4. Dress the rooms with curtains, textiles and lampshades
In addition to providing warmth to the environment, they
will serve to hide outdated windows. "Fabrics are an incredible resource
to change the air of a room," confirms Pili Molina, who knows first hand
the power of props in the decoration of the house.
In addition to curtains and blinds, keep in mind that
cushions, covers, plaids and lampshades, will transform an atmosphere,
"without having to invest a lot of money or time," recalls Molina.
5. Renew the doors
Paint them in the same tone as the walls. This will help to integrate them in a hidden
way in the environment, and will enhance the sense of spaciousness.
... Or quite the opposite.
"If we choose a color different from that of the walls, it is
convenient to study it in the whole decorative project, taking into account the
style and finishes of the rest of the space," adds Pili Molina. This
expert recommends "risk in accessories that you can change easily, more
than in structural things that we will not be painting continuously."
Eliminate those that do not zonify. Rosa Bramona remembers that it is interesting
the possibility of eliminating some door, "that does not have a clear use
to open the spaces".
Upholstery cuarterones. Or the entire door with vinyl
coatings that imitate textures.
Replace the knobs or handles with more refined ones. This is
vital to update the doors of passage.
6. Update the bathroom
Partial reform with vinyl coatings. "In Suelos y Paredes we transformed a bathroom, even changing the
bathtub for a shower, in just two days, thanks to the vinyl coatings for floors
and walls", says Demetrio: "They can be installed directly on tiles
or exposed brick, without being appreciated irregularities. "
Choose a suspended

Replace the
bathtub with a large shower. And put a screen instead of a curtain.
Paint the tiles. Rosa Bramona says that "painting the
tiles can be a solution, when they have a decoration difficult to ignore."
Mirrors, metallic fabrics: Enter surprise notes in the
bathroom. The designer of Masfotogenica Interiorismo proposes to add "a
different mirror or with built-in lighting, some design accessories or even
unexpected elements". An example we see in the image: the conventional
curtain of the bathtub has been covered with a metallic fabric, which gives a
futuristic look to the bathroom, with a minimum investment!
7. Put the kitchen to the last
Change the doors of the cabinets. As they are usually standard, renovating only
the doors - entrusting them to a remodeling company or a carpenter - is an
option to update the look of the kitchen. "This will be
reinforced, if we replace the countertop, sink and tap for more modern,"
adds Rosa Bramona.
Steel plate or tempered glass, to cover old tiles.
Renew the handles and baseboards. "Also placing a floor of vinyl tiles
forming a checkerboard, for example, is an economic option with important
results," says Molina.
Cover the walls and the floor in view, bordering the
furniture and without having to separate them or change them for others. This means a considerable saving in square
meters of material. The floor is installed removing the base that covers the
legs of the furniture, "the material is introduced a bit - even the walls
are very complicated - and, once they are replaced, the final result does not
differ from an integral reform", explains Demetrio Muñoz
